Through colour render with ashlar scribed blockwork and decorative lintel finish

Project background

A private client commissioned Lime, Listed & Historical to custom render multiple elevations . The client disliked the existing brickwork and requested a through‑colour render to achieve a more unified, masonry‑like appearance with the colour and texture of natural stone.

Brief

• Provide a durable, through‑colour render in the agreed tone.
• Create visual depth and a sandstone block appearance rather than a smooth, continuous surface.
• Incorporate a decorative lintel detail over openings to reference traditional stonework.

Our approach

Following an initial site survey and material discussion, we specified a through‑colour lime‑based render matched to the agreed stone tone. After applying the render coats and achieving the correct finish, the client expressed that the surface was too smooth and lacked the character of natural stone.

To address this we:

• Prepared a measured layout to define block courses and joint lines proportionate to the elevation.
• Hand‑scribed block edges into the topcoat to produce fine joint lines and a natural stone block rhythm.
• Carved & scribed decorative lintel effect into the render above the openings, matching the block coursing and scale.
• Refined the texture and tooling to replicate weathered sandstone surfaces and gently chamfered joints.

Outcome

The finished elevation delivers the requested through‑colour appearance with the added depth and character of sandstone blockwork. The scribed joints and decorative lintel create convincing masonry detail. The client was pleased with the enhanced visual interest and the sympathetic, durable finish.
